“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

Psalm 1:1

Interpersonal relationships play a significant role in shaping who we are and how we live. From childhood, we are molded by those around us—whether family members, friends, colleagues, or public figures. External influences, both positive and negative, have the power to shape our choices, habits, and even our character. Therefore, reflecting on these influences and how they impact our journey is essential for making conscious and responsible decisions.

Positive influences often act as beacons in the storms of life. Virtuous, ethical, and inspiring individuals can motivate us to develop strong values, pursue noble goals, and face adversity with resilience. For instance, a dedicated mentor can guide us through moments of doubt, encouraging us to explore our potential and follow a path of progress. Loyal friends, in turn, help us grow emotionally, offering support and sincere advice that strengthen our self-esteem and discernment.

On the other hand, negative influences can be equally powerful, though in a destructive sense. When we surround ourselves with people who exhibit toxic, selfish, or immoral behaviors, we risk adopting attitudes that harm our integrity and relationships. Social pressure is a classic example of this phenomenon: the desire for acceptance often leads individuals to act against their own values. Thus, exposure to negative influences can result in impulsive decisions, ethical missteps, and, in extreme cases, emotional and social downfall.

However, the weight of external influences should not be seen as something entirely beyond our control. Each individual has the responsibility to exercise discernment in filtering what they absorb from their surroundings. Recognizing the impact of the company we keep is the first step in taking control of our decisions. Cultivating healthy relationships and avoiding harmful associations are actions that protect us from misguided paths while strengthening our autonomy and identity.

Ultimately, external influences are inevitable and play a decisive role in our lives - either building us up or leading us astray. Learning to assess and prioritize positive influences is a continuous exercise in self-awareness and wisdom. After all, while we cannot fully control the environment we live in, we can choose who we allow to be part of our journey. This choice, more than any other, defines who we become.
