1. What Is Eternal Life?
The Bible describes eternal life as more than just living forever—it is about living in a perfect relationship with God. Jesus defines eternal life in this way:
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." – John 17:3
Eternal life is not just about duration, but about quality—it means living in the presence of God, free from sin, pain, and suffering. It is the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan for humanity.
2. Why Do We Need Eternal Life?
a) Sin Leads to Death
The Bible teaches that all people have sinned, and the consequence of sin is spiritual death:
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." – Romans 6:23
This means that, without salvation, humans are separated from God and destined for eternal punishment.
b) Eternal Life Is a Gift from God
Unlike earthly rewards that we can earn, eternal life is a gift from God. It cannot be achieved by human effort but is freely given to those who believe in Jesus Christ.
3. The Only Way to Receive Eternal Life
a) Salvation Through Jesus Christ
The Bible makes it clear that eternal life is found only in Jesus:
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." – John 14:6
Jesus is the only way to eternal life because He paid the penalty for sin by dying on the cross and rising from the dead.
b) Faith, Not Works
Many people believe that good works—such as helping others, attending church, or following religious traditions—can earn them a place in heaven. However, the Bible teaches that eternal life is based on faith, not works:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." – Ephesians 2:8-9
This means that no one can earn eternal life. It is received by grace through faith.
4. Steps to Receiving Eternal Life
The Bible outlines clear steps for receiving eternal life:
a) Acknowledge That You Are a Sinner
The first step is recognizing that all have sinned and need salvation:
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" – Romans 3:23
b) Believe in Jesus Christ
The next step is believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior:
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." – Romans 10:9
c) Repent from Sin
True faith leads to repentance, which means turning away from sin and following God’s ways:
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." – Acts 3:19
d) Receive Jesus as Your Savior
When someone sincerely believes in Jesus, they receive the gift of eternal life:
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." – John 3:36
5. What Happens After Receiving Eternal Life?
When a person accepts Jesus and receives eternal life, they become a new creation:
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." – 2 Corinthians 5:17
After salvation, a believer should:
Read the Bible regularly to grow in faith (Psalm 119:105)
Pray daily and maintain a close relationship with God (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Live according to God’s commandments (John 14:15)
Share the Gospel with others (Matthew 28:19-20)
Final Thoughts
Eternal life is not something we can earn—it is a gift from God to those who believe in Jesus Christ. It means living forever with God, free from sin and suffering.
If you have not yet accepted Jesus as your Savior, today is the perfect time to receive this incredible gift and secure eternal life in Him.
